Lingerie Dos and Don’ts

Wearing lingerie is all about feeling confident and empowered. If this is new territory for you, no need to worry! Getting lingerie for the first time can be intimidating, but we’re here to help. Once you know the right kind to buy, how to wear it, and how to take care of it, you can feel your sexiest for a long time.

How to Buy Lingerie

Do: Buy Multiples

If you have a favorite set, buy multiples to rotate often. Wearing the same bra every day can cause the fabric and elastic to wear out quicker – not to mention you’ll have to wash it every day, too! To prevent premature wear on your lingerie, get the same set in a few different colors and wear whichever one fits the occasion or mood.

Do: Get Fitted by an Expert

Before you buy lingerie, try getting fitted by an expert so you can get the right size. Nothing can ruin your confidence more than wearing undergarments that are too small or too large. Gaping and spillage are telltale signs that your lingerie doesn’t fit correctly. An expert can take measures of your bust, torso, waist, and hips to help you find your perfect fit.

Don’t: Sacrifice Quality for Anything

The last thing you want to do is purchase a poor-quality lingerie set. There’s nothing wrong with having a budget, but you shouldn’t buy something because it’s cheap. Good quality lingerie may be a bit pricey at the moment, but they won’t cause issues that will force you to get a new set every month.

Don’t: Limit Yourself to One Thing

You don’t always have to go the traditional route of nude or black when it comes to lingerie. You’re supposed to feel empowered and sexy in your lingerie set, even if you’re the only one who’s going to see it. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different prints, styles, or a pop of color.

How to Wear Lingerie

Do: Make Sure You’re Comfortable

Most people make the mistake of dressing for someone else and sacrificing comfort. Don’t wear something because this model or influencer says so. Wear what you think is sexy and what makes you comfortable because that’s when you can feel most confident.

Do: Have the Right Lingerie Wardrobe

If you’re planning to wear your lingerie under regular clothes, you’ll want to have the right kind in your closet to ensure maximum comfort. Anything with frills or ruffles will look sexy in the bedroom but bulky under everyday clothing. If you want to wear lingerie as regular undergarments, get something sleek that hugs your body.

Don’t: Psych Yourself Out

Let’s set the record straight. All body types can rock lingerie. Just because you don’t have the “traditional” model body doesn’t mean you can’t feel sexy and empowered. Lingerie is inclusive, so rock it no matter how you’re shaped. Just make sure to find something that caters to your unique body.

Don’t: Rush the Moment

You don’t want to get dressed (or undressed) in a hurry. You could risk damaging your lingerie, and it’ll also leave you feeling frazzled. If you’re putting on lingerie for that special someone, there’s nothing wrong with letting them wait a bit while you take your time to get it right. The anticipation might make them even more excited!

How to Care for Lingerie

Do: Always Handwash Your Lingerie

The spinning of the washing machine can be too rough on your delicates, but handwashing them will ensure their longevity. If you really must toss your lingerie in the wash, put it in a special protective pouch and use a gentle cycle with warm water.

Do: Store Your Lingerie Properly

When storing your lingerie, carefully fold and place them in their own drawer. Dumping them anywhere will cause crumpling, or worse, hooks and strings can get tangled with other fabrics! If you have molded bras, stack them on top of each other to prevent ripples in the cups.

Don’t: Put Lingerie in the Dryer

We can’t stress this enough: NEVER put your lingerie in the dryer under any circumstances. The heat can damage your undergarments by reducing the fabric’s elasticity and bending the wires out of shape. Each garment has its own drying rules, but you most likely have to lay it flat or hang it up to dry.

Don’t: Use Harsh Detergents

Mild soaps are always best when cleaning your lingerie, as traditional detergents can damage the soft fibers and cause them to deteriorate. Certain ones could also cause skin irritation for some people! Never use hot water to wash your lingerie.
